Components of a Complete Oral Exam

Examination of Teeth

1

The doctors and hygienists conduct a visual examination of your teeth to assess existing irregularities and check for clinically visible signs of tooth decay, fractures, clenching or grinding, or any other concerns. X-rays are an important diagnostic tool used to detect periodontal disease, tooth decay, tumours, cysts, developmental problems, or any other abnormalities not clinically visible.

Periodontal and Wear Check

2

By looking for early signs of stress or wear on teeth, we evaluate potential future problems and find ways to prevent them in the initial stages. Care and restoration of the teeth are pointless if the periodontal (supporting) structures of the teeth are unhealthy. Our dentists and hygienists will check for early warning signs of periodontal (gum) disease.

Oral Cancer Screening & TMJ Assessment

3

In oral cancer screening, our dentists check the hard tissues (tooth and bone) and evaluate the soft tissues. The inside surfaces of the mouth are carefully evaluated for changes that can be precursors to oral cancer. The TMJ examination involves assessing the health and functionality of your temporomandibular joints, palpating the muscles of mastication, and checking your bite.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Regular Oral Examinations Matter

It is better to prevent dental problems in the first place rather than treat them later. Many conditions, such as abscesses, tooth decay, and bone loss, can cause serious consequences before they even show significant symptoms.

Regular exams help catch

• Early tooth decay before it becomes a bigger problem

• Signs of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis)

• Oral cancer at treatable stages

• Grinding or clenching wear patterns

• TMJ issues

• Abscesses and other infections

Our main approach at Balsam Dental in The Beaches is to make our patients aware of their oral conditions so they can choose appropriate treatment and minimize the risks of severe oral problems in the future.

BENEFITS

Common questions, answered.

What Is the Difference Between a Dental Specialist and a Dental Hygienist?

Generally, a dental specialist is a professionally trained dentist who diagnoses and treats dental complications and restores your oral health. On the other hand, hygienists help you to keep your mouth clean and disease-free by providing you with deep oral cleanings.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

Most dental hygienists play a significant role in people's oral well-being. They uncover, process, and interpret dental radiographs (x-rays), remove plaque and stains from the teeth, apply preventive care materials including fluoride and sealants, show patients proper oral hygiene techniques, and guide patients on maintaining optimal oral hygiene.

How Often Should You See a Dental Hygienist?

You should visit your dental hygienist at regular intervals in order to preserve your natural teeth functionality. A few factors influence the frequency of your visits, like how well you take care of your teeth, your eating and oral hygiene habits, and your genetic tendency toward gum infections.

Are Oral Health and Overall Health Related?

Oral health and overall health have a synergistic relationship and significantly influence each other. If various oral diseases remain untreated for prolonged periods, they can cause serious overall health complications, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and various kidney diseases.

How long does a first-visit exam take?

A first-visit exam usually takes about an hour. That includes a full assessment of your teeth and gums, digital X-rays if needed, a cleaning, and time for us to review your history and answer questions. Follow-up check-ups take less time — usually 30–45 minutes.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring a list of any medications you're taking, your insurance information (if you have coverage), and a note of any specific concerns you want to raise. If you've had recent X-rays or dental work elsewhere, ask that clinic to send us your records. That's it — we handle the rest.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?

No judgment — a lot of our new patients haven't been in for years. Your first visit is about assessing where things stand and building a plan. We'll go at a pace that works for you, not rush into treatment. Many patients are relieved to find things aren't as bad as they feared.

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child's first visit by age one or within six months of their first tooth coming in. The first visit is short and mostly about making the experience positive — a look inside their mouth, a chat with parents, and a chance for your child to get comfortable in the chair before any real work is ever needed.
