Sedation Options at Balsam Dental

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid the care they need. At Balsam Dental in The Beaches, we offer sedation options that help you feel calm and at ease during your appointment, whether you're facing a simple procedure or something more involved. Our two main options are nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Both help patients get the care they need without the stress that has been holding them back. During your consultation, we'll review your medical history and discuss which option is right for you.

How Our Sedation Options Work

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

1

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small mask worn over the nose. It takes effect within a few minutes and wears off just as quickly once we stop the flow. You stay awake and can talk with us throughout your appointment, but you feel deeply relaxed and less aware of time passing. Because the effects wear off so fast, you can drive yourself home right after your visit.

Oral Sedation

2

Oral sedation is taken as a pill about an hour before your appointment. It produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide, making it a good choice for longer procedures or patients with more significant anxiety. You'll still be awake and able to respond, but you may not remember much of the appointment afterward. Because the effects last several hours, you'll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

Choosing the Right Option

3

During your consultation, we'll talk through your medical history, your comfort level, and the specific treatment you're having. For a straightforward cleaning or filling, nitrous oxide is often all that's needed. For patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing more extensive work, oral sedation may be a better fit. In some cases, we may recommend a combination of both.

SAFETY

How Safe Is Sedation Dentistry?

Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have long safety records when administered by trained dental professionals. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over a century and is one of the safest sedative options available. Oral sedatives are also well-established and considered very safe for the vast majority of patients. Before recommending either option, we review your full medical history, current medications, and any conditions that could affect how you respond. Patients in early pregnancy, patients with certain respiratory conditions, and patients taking specific medications may not be candidates. We'll walk through all of this at your consultation before making a plan.

WHEN TO CONSIDER

When Sedation Dentistry Makes Sense

Dental anxiety is real and common. If fear or discomfort has kept you from getting the care you need, sedation dentistry can help you get past that barrier and into the chair.

Common reasons patients choose sedation

• Dental anxiety or fear that has caused you to postpone care

• A strong gag reflex

• Complex or lengthy procedures like extractions, root canals, or implants

• Difficulty sitting still for extended periods

• Sensitivity to needles or dental instruments

• Children who need help staying calm during treatment

If any of these apply to you or a family member, mention sedation when you book your appointment at Balsam Dental in The Beaches. We'll walk you through the options and help you feel comfortable about the plan before your visit.

BENEFITS

Common questions about sedation dentistry.

Will I be conscious during the procedure?

With both nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you stay awake and able to respond throughout your appointment. Neither option puts you to sleep. Most patients describe feeling deeply relaxed and unbothered by what's happening around them. Some patients under oral sedation don't remember much of the appointment afterward, which many find to be a welcome side effect.

Is sedation dentistry safe for children?

Nitrous oxide is safe and commonly used for anxious children. The effects wear off quickly, so kids can return to school or normal activities right after their appointment. Oral sedation is used less often for children and is only considered on a case-by-case basis for older children with more significant anxiety. We'll discuss what's appropriate at your child's consultation.

Can I drive home after sedation?

After nitrous oxide, yes. The effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask, so you're fine to drive, work, or go about your day right after. After oral sedation, no. The effects can last several hours and you'll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

How do I know which option is right for me?

We'll help you figure this out at your consultation. For most patients with mild to moderate anxiety, nitrous oxide is enough to make treatment comfortable. For severe anxiety, phobias, or longer complex procedures, oral sedation may be a better fit. Your medical history, the treatment you're having, and your personal comfort level all play a role in the recommendation.

Will I be conscious during the procedure with nitrous oxide?

Yes — nitrous oxide is a mild sedative, not a general anaesthetic. You stay awake and can respond to us throughout the procedure. Most patients describe feeling deeply relaxed, a bit floaty, and less aware of time passing. You're still in control, just much calmer.

Can I drive myself home after nitrous oxide?

Yes — this is one of the main advantages of nitrous oxide over stronger sedation options. The effects wear off within 3–5 minutes of removing the mask, so you're safe to drive, return to work, or pick up kids from school right after your appointment. No supervision or recovery time required.

Is nitrous oxide the right choice for my anxiety, or should I consider stronger sedation?

For most patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety, nitrous oxide is enough to make treatment comfortable. For severe anxiety, dental phobia, or long complex procedures, stronger options (like oral sedation) may be more appropriate. During your consultation we can discuss what level of support will work best for you.

Are there any reasons I shouldn't use nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide isn't recommended if you're in the first trimester of pregnancy, have certain respiratory conditions, or have specific ear or sinus issues. We'll review your medical history before recommending it. For the vast majority of patients, it's very safe and one of the most well-established sedation options in dentistry.
